I asked my mom if I could turn the old hottub into a pond. Can someone tell me a little bit about the differences between ponds and fish tanks. I don't know if I'm ready for this.

Well you look down at ponds, so the aquascaping is based on that idea. But the basics are the same.

Yep, the basics are pretty much the same. Manmade ponds require filtration, wcs and will cycle just like a tank. The tests you use on your tank (such API master kit) can be used for the pond as well- no need to purchase a "pond" test kit as freshwater is freshwater whether its inside or outside. The only other tests that may be worth considering initially are GH and KH tests as rain water which tends to run acidic to very acidic (depending on where you live) can be an issue if you experience a lot of rain.
You will need to figure filtration setup and how you plan to do wcs as well as consider if freezing or predators will be an issue. Beyond this, a hot tub would make a great platform for a pond build! Please ask any questions!
