I was told at my local store that I could just place the plants and pile some of the stones around them and that I didn't need dirt or substrate . . . but I'm finding that hard to believe.

I followed their instructions but am worries that the plants will have nothing to grip but loose stones and float around.

Rubber bands are like underwater duct tape not to mention fish safe!

Well at the 24 hour mark only two plants uprooted. I weighted one down with a large stone and rubber banded the other. All plants still green!

Depends on what plants. Some plants needs some sort of substrate to have their roots naturallly attach too.
