My snails eat fish flakes I fed one straight to mine when at top of tank water line lol fun to watch I have mystery snails and they can breed in freshwater I'm pretty sure

I'm fairly certain mystery snail eggs can't hatch in water.
Nerite snails grow smaller at about 1 inch

did a little reading on the nerite snail. They only breed in brackish water

one more question, would they need algae wafers as well? Or would they scavenge flakes? I have a rainbow shark and a upside down catfish which also like to vaccume

They will Scavenge for flakes and eat any algae growing in the tank. They will also much on live plants you have in there just not to a noticeable extent. But it couldn't hurt to give them algae wafers

It depend what type you get, you could get mystery snails or nerite snails. And you could introduce them all at the same time

I'm thinking maybe 2 snails and 3-4 Amanos shrimp for variation?

That would be cool, but you're barbs and upside down catfish could very well make a meal out of the shrimp

Mystery snails lay eggs above water line so if you keep ur water low enough like 3-4 inch space from under you tank lid to water line you can get eggs than babies

very good point. I'm almost leaning towards oto cats now.
