How to attach a java fern mat to a piece of slate?

I have ordered a large java fern mat. It's supposed to come on Tuesday. I was wondering whats the best way to attach it to a piece of slate i have?

Thread, a rubber band, super glue will all work. Nothing wrong with slate but I prefer stones a bit more porous so the roots attach nicely.

The thinnest fishing line you can find.
As with the other poster, a high surface area stone such as lava rock will give the rhizome/roots something to cling to although slate will work.

It should work fine.

Will I need to eventually remove it?

Yes. Removing it is pretty simple, though, once the plant is anchored.

Just a rough estimate how long should I wait to remove it?

It depends on things like lighting, fertilization, etc. - just don't get in a hurry. Java ferns are very slow growers.
