I cant tell male or female!

I have tried venting but the vents all look female

I'd guess female from appearance. The black on the pectoral and anal fins generally becomes much more prominent and the black stripe in the dorsal often becomes wider in males. Older dominant males may show darkening of the throat and the striping, as well. May be the dominant female in the tank, or it may be a subdominant male, though I'd say the former. What other fish do ya have in the tank? Dominant males of other species can keep a male of any other mbuna species from showin' full color.
