I just fished something out of my fish's mouth.

Ya know when you see one of your 4-legged animals running around with something like hair or string hanging out of it's rear and you help your little buddy clean it up? I'm staring at my tank and realize that one of my bettas seems to have a hair or string hanging out of his mouth. Me being the nice fishymommy I am scoop him out and pull whatever it was out of it's mouth. Did I do the right thing or should I have let nature take it's course?

(sorry for the semi-gross analogy)
