I have a spare 5 gallon tank that I am going to plant up and I'm wondering what inverts I can stock it with. I'm a newbie so I would prefer ones that aren't too challenging, and won't outgrow/outbreed my tank (at least not too fast), but have some interest. I was thinking maybe some zebra nerite snails?

I am also wondering what kind of invert would do well in a 10 gallon with a male betta.

I don't know much about inverts so any suggestions/thoughts/tips are very welcome!

For the 10G you could put snails or shrimp! You could add the snails to the 5G or shrimp. Also bettas are compatible African dwarf frogs which are cool so you also can keep that in mind.

What kind of snails or shrimp do you think would be best? And how do you keep their numbers down or are they self limiting?

Cherry shrimp are very cool I think but there are many more types. The zebra Nerite that you picked out sounds good. Nerites can't reproduce in freshwater for some reason. Shrimp for me don't really reproduce fast or anything. Pond snails and MTS snails are asexual and I wouldn't get them in case you over feed then they will reproduce fast.

Hey! Welcome to invert heaven here!

Try any Neocardinia species. What color is your favorite? All of them are similar and easy.

I'd say start off with some kind of red cherry. For my first round of shrimp, I'm starting with painted fire reds.

Congrats on setting up a tank for just inverts! If I was keeping my 5g just for inverts, I'd have eventually put in Dwarf Cajun Crayfish. They will breed and keep a steady population, too.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

No, they are not asexual. They are hermaphroditic. But yes, they do reproduce quickly.

If you plan to have a Betta in there, try Ghost Shrimp. Bettas tend to ignore them. Cherry Shrimp tend to become snacks. If you decide to skip the Betta then your Cherry Shrimp can populate and you can have an awesome little planted tank.

Brighter coloured shrimps attract more attention. You hear all sorts of reports on bettas, I suspect personality is involved. Snails are safe with a betta.

On the invert-only tank, if you can keep water clean and stable then pretty much anything from the neocaridina family is possible. Start with half a dozen and pretty soon you'll have more shrimp
