You can completely remove a leaf if it is dying, it's best to cut the stem near the rhizome. As to trimming leaves, you can but it will kill that leaf, it won't regrow and will likely start producing leaflets near the end of the cut leaf and all nutrients sent to the original leaf will go to the new leaflets rather than the original leaf.
