I want to setup my 55 with sand and java moss, can I bury the java moss canvas under a thin layer of sand and do I need to do anything special! I want to grow my moss before I add a community.

its probably better to get some wood or stone and tie the moss to it. You can probably find some small rocks (marble-golf ball size) tie with thread or fishing line and send to the bottom of your tank. The moss will grow out from there.

Java moss will grow in just about any condition and anywhere, as long as it can attach itself to something. You can float it, too, and it will find a spot to grow.
