My friend has a 55 gallon reef with 8 small fish, 60# of LR, 2, 150W halide ...

His KH is bouncing from 180 - 90 in 5 days. What could cause this to happen? How can he regulate his KH? All of his corals are dying with the exception of a sun coral and yellow fiji leather which are flourishing. It makes no sense to me!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You're talking in ppm I assume? That's 10 - 5 dkH for those that think like I do.

Wow, that is pretty extreme. I assume he reads it at 180 after a water change, then by the end of the week the kH has fallen down to 90?

What test kit is being used for these tests?

The last time he changed water was a month ago. He uses the nutrafin HK test and I have tested it with a newer test from the same brand and got the same results as him.

Is the kh up at 10 right after the water change? Or is it rising and falling seemingly on its own?

How many corals in this tank?
What kind of corals?
Are any supplements being used?
What are the ca and pH levels?
