Lighting times for sump lighting?

What should I do with the lighting in my sump? Leave it on all the time, or put it on 12/12. Since I've had the sump(bout a month)the light has been on 24/7. I've experimented recently by turning it off during the day. The tips of all the plant alge got white. Is there something I should be putting in the water or doing special, cause the plant alge don't seem to grow. I got a T5 24" on a 12 gal sump, it's mounted pretty high due to the PVC intakes and returns. Is this my problem, not enough or the wrong light?

Lights are fine, The best way is to have your sump lights on when your display tank lights go out. So they switch basically.
This gives the best places for little critters like pods to hide.

Alternating lights also stablizes your PH levels.

I run my refuge lighting 24/7. Grape calerpa needs 24/7 and constant pruning? What do you have in yours? If you are not doing 24 hours as stated above you have to do opposite cycles from your display tank.

Here are some pics. Not sure what type it is. There are a few diffrent ones, the bubbly ones in the front and the more plant looking one in the corner. I only tryed cycling the lights a coupple times, but as I said the tips would all turn white. Not sure what that means.
