will having live plants in my tank help keep my ammonia levels down? if so which plants are best for that?

Yes. Most aquatic plants prefer ammonium to nitrate and will take it up first.

Fast growers will take it up quicker but are a little more involved (maintenance-wise) than slow growers.

Hello gauge...

To keep nitrogen out of the tank, you need to take good care of the water. Remove half and replace it with new, treated tap water every few days. This way, you don't have to rely on aquatic plants to do the job.
