Ok. But also I have some pretty big gravel right now and it seems like they're trying to move you but can't. Should I switch to sand?

You don't have to but it's fun to watch them play and push the sand around

I guess I'll try to get some. They're cool pets but somewhat hard to keep
 
Your ph is fine for rams they will breed. Discus have breed in 7.8 before. Just keep it steady.

You buy quality IALs and put them in your tank. Maybe 1 per 10g ??
Or do water changes with part Distilled part Tap and use Conditioner ( Prime is my choice ). That will lower your PH.

Fish are pretty adaptable. Whatever you decide, keep you readings stable. Live plants and driftwood can help also.
