Lowering Water Hardness?

I am creating a breeding presentation of neon tetra's for a local aquarium club. After researching, I found that neons require soft water (2-6 gh)

Should I just add aquarium salt to do this? How much?

Salt isn't going to soften your water. The easiest way besides just adding RO water is to add some peat to your filter. It depends on how hard your water is already, if it is pretty hard (> 12) then peat might not lower it enough.
