Can anyone give any insight, good or bad, in using Minneapolis water in their planted tanks? I know from previous experience that our water has ammonia in it right out of the tap- do I need to be concerned about inherent phosphate levels out of the tap as well?

Most water tests positive for ammonia out of the tap due to the chloramines being detected by ammonia tests. In the majority of cases it's not a problem for plants, and a strong biofilter will be able to quickly reduce the ammonia to nitrates in an established tank. You should also being using a water dechlorinator like Prime that can also neutralize ammonia.
