Do Molly's need brackish water or will they do fine in fresh

Molly's have a very wide range of salinity. I have some in full salt, some in brackish, and some in fresh and they are all healthy. So to answer your question, no they do not "need" salt. They can thrive in freshwater to full marine.

Just go get a 20g offline or something, they are really cheap. Make a nice community tank. You could do just fake plants to cut down the price.

In a 5g you can really only stick a betta or shrimp or one of the micro fish.
10g is much the same. Upgrade to a 20g long and you will be much freer with options.
