Hi folks, I thought i'd share my latest effort with you as its starting to mature nicely now..

ok here are a few pics of the corals I currently have, all have been grown from tiny frags and the tank was started in December 2011

Duncan, started as one head, now has 15, been in about 3 months...

Unfortunately my Iphone doesn't pick up the true colours of these corals and they are a lot more vivid in reality.

Still very much an SPS newbie as I understand 6 months is no time to claim success but so far so good, if anybody has any tips to offer don't hesitate to do so.

thanks for taking the time to view.

Looking really cool man. Question, I asked this months ago and no one had the answer for me...what is the difference between the deep water coral and the usual stuff we put in our tanks? They still have high light requirements...

I'm not really sure to be honest, it lost colour under 6x39W T5, but ive recently put one of the LED units the same as Doug uses over instead and it's really started to colour back up. As I say I'm relatively new to SPS myself and I'm learning every day, but I'm willing to learn and always try to listen to the SPS veterans to further my enjoyment. Hopefully someone that knows the answer will chime in mate.

Ok, it is a very interesting question I would love to have the answer to. I have done nothing but murder all SPS I have tried to keep. I have a red planet acro coming my way and now that the 55 is going strong and seeing great results out of my LPS, I think it is finally ready.

To be honest, I've only lost one piece, guess I've just been lucky. I try to keep things as stable as I can and touch wood its working do far.

Red planets are great acros. They do require a very good amout of current to do well. Do you have current pumps in your 55??? What lights are you running?? Heres a pic of the red planet i have been growing since i got it as a 1/2" frag.

Lol yeah I have enough for them in my 55. I have 2 Koralia 750s, a 1050, and a marine land really large number that puts out more flow than my koralias. I'm also running 2 ecotech radions on my tank.

You should have no problems keeping sps alive. I dont know much about leds i use metal halides on my tank but from what i have read you should be able to grow sps. Are your water parameters good??

Yes they are, my tank is doing great. Just had some bad mishaps prior to this with stray current and my water supply being tainted by cow crap and chemicals when my neighbors sprayed their fields. Killed almost 1000 dollars worth of coral.

I have a couple questions-

A duncan isnt a sps. Isnt this an sps only? Maybe not.

Also regarding the duncan, i have the same one. It basically wont grow a stem that is any longer than it is, but new heads keep popping up everywhere!! Is this a type that never branches more? How does it get bigger?

Yes, duncans are LPS. Why you find them under SPS is beyond me. There are 2 types of duncans, branching and bushy.

Ah so we got a bushy? How does it get bigger then if it never grows much more stalk.

My duncan actually shouldnt be a bushy, i witnessed it being fragged off of a branching!! Haha. Does it take a long time to grow the new branches maybe?

Yes sorry, my Duncan is One of two lps in there, I should have named it "my mostly SPS effort" he just sits happily in the bottom corner, away from the higher current at the top!
