I've never had an issue with skittish Thorichthys, however I do keep them in larger groups.

I could be wrong but I feel full grown tiger barbs could hold their own with firemouths. The ones I had flared a lot but never really made contact. The op seems that he really likes tiger barbs.

They likely would be just fine, there's a reason they have been in the hobby so long and are almost always recommended as a beginner fish.
