I got a new 2" clam yesterday and it has not completely opened up yet. I think it is a maxima clam. I put it on the sand first and then moved it up to about mid tank today. So far he has just opened up the same amount.
Was it more open at the fish store you got it from? What lights is it under now vs what was it under at the store? Do you have any nippers? Are the byssal threads still in tact?
Honestly small clams like that are a real pain in the butt. They can go from great to dead in no time and for seemingly no reason.
As long as the mantle is extended outside of the shell I wouldn’t be overly worried. Clams won’t have to extend as much if the lighting is better than what your lfs was running.
With that said, bribo has hit all the nails on the head.
