New to Canisters

I have a 125 gallon tank that I haven't used in probably 6 years. I was using an undergravel filter but it just couldn't keep up and I ended up with fungus problems.

I am going to a canister filter but have never used one before. I was considering the:
Eheim
Marineland
Fluval
I like the Eheim for power consumption rates and low noise level. Any thoughts on canister use/experience?

Also substrate....just some sand I guess???

I was going to get an Eheim but the one I wanted was to big to fit under my 150gal (built-in). I ended up getting a Fluval FX5. So far it's been impressive with good flow & quiet. I had a FILSTAR XP3 before and didn't like it. It was leaky for me but they work for many.

For a tank that size I would look at running 1 or 2 AquaTop CF500 filters, depending on how much flow you want. At $120 a pop, they're a killer deal. I run the CF300 and have no complaints about it. Great buys!
