I have a 20 gal standard freshwater tank that is cycling right now, and I'm going to make it a community tank. I decided to try live plants because in my other 2 tanks I have fake plants. I watched many videos and some people used aquatic soil and some used regular sand. I'm not sure if what I have is okay, and I would like some help. I have some java fern and anubias in some standard petco sand, but I have the "Flourish" plant food that I added. Will this be enough? Do I need special substrate with more nutrients? Please help!

Hey mate, no need for planted substrate in low tech. Anything is fine.

Dosing flourish is a great idea aswell.

Anubias and Java fern shouldn't be buried in the substrate or they will rot. Your better off tieing them to rocks or driftwood :)

Keep your lights on for 8-9 hours and u should be set [emoji106]
