Not the "usual" white fungus on driftwood

Mopani Driftwood -boiled for ~9 hours, then cold-soaked for another 14.

This stuff grew over the course of about a week (Pic #1), then died(?) and "melted" off the wood (yay), see 2nd pic.

Water was super cloudy so I did a 20% wafer change and the stuff started growing back 24 hours later. Pic #1

Has anyone seen this webby stuff before?!?
Is this also a 'wait it out' situation? I can't find pics that match what i've got in this 5-gal. tank, so, not sure how to figure out what to do, if anything.
All the "white fungus on driftwood" posts I see are of more cloudy- or fuzzy-looking stuff.


Have had decent params throughout:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrate/Nitrite: 0
PH: 7.2-7.6
kH: ~80
GH: ~120

That is a spectacular display. A slime mold. That is what I think it is.

My idea would try pouring vinegar on the wood while it is outside of the tank in say a pre cleaned sink.

Then after letting that soak in for awhile 20-30 min maybe,
use baking soda all over it,
brush it in or rub it around very well,
let sit for a little longer 20-30 minutes
and rinse with cool water very well
soak in a bucket for a little while
and then rinse again.

Try and see if that fixes the issue.

Curious of what kind of wood it is?
