I have been in the hobby for a few years now but have only kept planted freshwater tanks. I've wanted a saltwater since just after I got my first tank but have always been intimidated by saltwater. A friend recently set up a 30 gallon with relative ease. I had to take care of it while he was on vacation and it gave me the courage to get on with starting my own. I am a total newbie and I am going to have a ton of questions.
Here is what I got so far. The tank is the nuvo 4 gallon. I have it's stock light, filter, and pump. I want corals but am unsure as to what kind of corals my light can handle. Speaking of, my buddy is upgrading the light on his nuvo 8 and I'm going to see if I can get his old light to put on my 4. I have bought 2 punds of LR so far, 4 pounds of live sand, and for the time being I am using reef water from my lfs for waterchanges and RO water for top offs. I got a little excited and bough a single little hermit crab. Got him four days ago or so. I do plan on getting an in tank refug that I read a lot of other nuvo tank owners getting.
On to some questions:
1. The tank is already cycled because I used LR, Lsand, and reef water from an established tank right? I'm buying another 2 pds of LR tomorrow.
2. Can my light can handle easy soft corals? I think it's just a 3 watt. I plan on buying some mushrooms and small zoa colonies tomorrow.
3. Since the first hermit crab is doing ok, can I get the rest of my cuc tomorrow when I get the rest of my LR?
4. Any pointers, life lessons to bestow upon me?

Here is my tank the first day, next to my shrimp tank, and then just yesterday. I plan on keeping this thread updated so tag alone for progress and more pictures. Hmm. I'll make sure the pictures are turned right on my next post.

As promised I went to my lfs today. I picked up 2.5 more pounds of LR for the tank. I'm pretty happy with the scape. It has plenty of nooks and crannys for my future tenant. :) While at my lfs they were having a sale and I couldn't resist grabbing a few corals. I got a blue spotted red mushroom, a cool neon green one, and a more dull brownish one. I also got two little zoanthid colonies. I am really excited. Here's a few pictures. I do have a couple of hitchhikers that I am unsure about. They are about and inch/inch and a half, red, kinda flat, and have small looking white hairs or spikes along the side of it's back. I'll keep an eye out to snap a picture of one.
