I have an old ro/di unit that is atleast 5 years old. I know the filters and membrane has never been changed. I'm thinking of using this but don't know if it's a good idea/investment. I'm thinking of either buying a new unit on ebay for $120 or only changing the ro membrane and use it as is. How should I do this? Is it even safe to change only the ro membrane?

Just get a replacement ro membrane and new carbon and sediment filters. Most membranes are a standard size and should fit your unit. I replaced the membrane in my 15 yr old ro unit many many times and I did not buy the replacement membranes from the same manufacturer of the ro unit itself.
About 2 yrs ago I upgraded my ro unit to 1 that sits under he sink and has a tank for drinking water. Depending on the cost of replacement cartridges, it may be cheaper for you to just buy a whole new unit.
