Pearl gourami help

I purchased a pearl gourami from petco last week and she passed away the other day. She was fine, swimming, eating and such. My parameters are all excellent as my tank is almost a few years old. So I am going to return the fish tomorrow and was wanting another one. I'm curious if pearl gourami's do best in groups or single? Not sure if I should get just one or 3. I've been looking online for a while now and I had mixed reviews so I got just the one and if they did best in groups I could always add more...

I bucks conventional wisdom but my experience is they do best in trios

I would say a single or a true pair. They aren't a schooling species. But usually fairly peaceful. Two males may fight.
