So I added peat to an Ac30 filled to the brim. How long until it no longer softens the water?

I wouldnt mind knowing alittle about adding peat also. Im just worried if i soften the water using peat when i preform a water change, if i dont keep the water change to a lower percentage i could swing the ph too far one way.
