hi,ok ive never had a prob with my ph,ive been using ro water for about 4 months and i use caribasea arragamight reminaraliser, now i had my water tested at my local marine specialists and my ph was 7.9.i dont have a build up of crap,i do weekly water changes and yes i retested after about 6 hours of the lights been on and it was the same.can overstocking effect the ph?if not any ideas and can this cause a prob short term?

Is the surface of the water being broken cuz a buildup of CO2 can cause the ph to drop.

How many fish do you have?

It is very difficult to transport water to have it tested for pH. pH, by nature, will drop considerably in a closed container - so the longer you had it in a container on the way to the LFS, the lower the pH would be.

Also, the less air included in the container, again, the more severe the pH drop.

I'd definitely recommend that you buy a good test kit, and test it yourself, with a fresh sample directly from your tank. pH should be lowest right before your lights turn on, and highest a short time before the end of your photoperid.

HTH,

i did a test with my own kit about 6 hours after turning on the lights, the reading was the same.i had a moray eel witch ate a lot but i took him out of my tank this afternoon,i only have a copperband a maroon clown,a mandarin, and 2 damsels which i am trying my hardest 2 get out of my tank  .o yeah and i have a wave machine which is really breaking up te surface.

can overstocking effect the ph?

Yes, it will effect the ph.

if not any ideas and can this cause a prob short term?

When is the last time you did a water change? (I know you said weekly, but was this at the end of the week and how much are you changeing?)
What is housed in the tank?
Is it a reef tank, FOWLR or FO? (The ph should not flutuate nearly as much in a FO as with a reef)

i have a 60gal reef setup concisting of both hard and soft corals and various other inverts, like i said ive never had a prob but i did add a moray about 3 weeks ago,i did think i was over stocking slightly with it but the wife fell in love with it.anyway the eel has gone and im hoping this fixes the problem.
