can someone help ID this plant for me? I'm also wondering why the old leaves on the bottom are shaped so much differently from the new leaves (growth since I've had the plant) up top. TIA :)

It looks like red nesaea. I've got the golden version in one of my tanks. It's very possible that the plant was grown emersed and the new leaves are adapted for aquatic life while the old leaves are better for terrestrial life. For nesaea to flourish, you really need high light levels and CO2 injection. I bought mine at a fish swap and the seller told me he doesn't usually even bring that plant because so few people have tanks that can support it.

http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f20/high-power-led-fixture-for-a-planted-tank-141021-7.html There's a picture of my nesaea in the middle of the page. It was grown emersed. The new leaves are more elongated like the new leaves on your plant.

yes, I do believe I remember that name. I won't be too bummed if it doesn't last, it was only a couple bucks, but it seems to be doing ok. the top half of the plant is all new since I took it home. the bottom half of the leaves are dying but I figured it was due to lighting change from the LFS to my tank. it actually seems to be doing better than the ludwigia repens. I got at the same time.
