I have a 55 gallon tank thats been up and running for 4 years now. I also have a 20 gallon tank that I have a few minnows and a larger brim about 3 inches long that I caught out of the retention pond in my back yard. They have been in the tank for about 4 months and are doing very well. I now want to use my 20 gallon tank to start a salt water tank. I just want to put the fish back in the pond but my family says that it would be cruel now that I have domesticated them (lol) Would it be safe to put them in my big tank or could they be carrying some disease that I don't know about even though they look healthy.

Your fish will be absolutely fine in the pond, but keep in mind there are all kinds of predators that can eat your fish, especially smaller ones ( being 5" or less) as for any sickness, just keep an eye on them, by now they should be used to you, just go out there frequently and give them some attention. They will probably love being in the pond more than a tank.

Put them back in the pond. You likely caught them up and way surpassed their siblings. So it is time to free willy

That's what I was thinking. They probably would have been food for bigger fish by now. Maybe they will have a better chance for survival now...lol

Putting them back where you got them is like catch and release.
The only possible issue is that Florida has a list of fish that are illegal to return tithe water if caught.
These are all the aquarium and aqua farming fish like tilapia, oscars, walking catfish, plecostoous .....

As along as your bream is not a tilapia. :)

No, just your common minnows and a bream. They came out of the pond so they might be going back in. Just not sure if it would be safe to put them in my big tank with the tropicals. As for plecos, we have have some giant ones in my retention pond. Alspond, were in central Fl. do you live?
