Prepping canister filter that was in salt water....

I got a Cascade 1000 for $30! It was used in saltwater though. What do I have to do so it will be safe in my African cichlid tank??

Just rinse it would with vinegar then water to remove any salt deposits and replace the media.

How much vinegar do you use? Can I reuse the bio media if I clean / rinse that or should I toss it?

IMO I would just rinse in old tank water if you have an existing tank setup. Else rinse with tap water. And your good to go.

I use half water half vinegar but that's probably excessive. only thing I'd be worried about is excess salt stuck in the media. If your willng to spend the time cleaning it the tiny but of salt that might be left wont do any harm.

Oh and make sure to rinse thoroughly after using the vinegar.
