Would you recommend a protein skimmer on a 20 gallon tank? If so what ones?

If you have a sump the skimmer would prob be a good thing to have. If not, it's still not necessary but would make param stability better and maintenance easier.

Nano and other small tanks don't need a skimmer. It is easy to remove the nitrates/phosphates via water changes. If this was a 35 gallon tank, a skimmer would be helpful. Below that there are mixed reviews.

+1. It really come down to do you want one, a 20 is easy enough to run without one. I have 1 20g with a skimmer and 1 without, maintenance routine is the same on both

i agree with the above posters, not necessary but not a bad thing to have. :) Once you get to like 40g it becomes more relevant in my opinion.
