The best way to go is to use a sump refugium. You can hide it under you tank. Than you can put a skimmer in the sump or hang it on the sump, this keeps everything hidden and put of sight. I personally like having everything in my sump because if anything goes wrong or overflows it won't make a mess.

I also wanted to add when buying a skimmer don't cheap out research them and make sure that the skimmer you pick is going to work to your needs. You get what you pay for, I have made that mistake and bought a cheap one that did nothing. I bought the reef octopus skimmer and it works amazing!

We're very consistant with 25% weekly water changes, so I believe that a skimmer may not be a neccessity for us. We'll continue our research on protein skimmers, though, in case we decide to purchase one sometime in the future. We'll look at and consider the octopus skimmer that you mentioned.
