I am having problem with water quality in quarantine tank. It is 5 gal bare bottom tank with HOB filter and heater. In the past I have moved foam insert from my 30gal tank to the quarantine. It took care of ammonia but I got bacteria bloom in the quarantine tank on the second day. I thought it coming form the junk stacked in the cycled foam. So on different occasions I have tried cycled ceramic media (biomax aquaclear) from 30 gal and ammonia remover. The result is the same: the water gets cloudy on the second day after fish moves in and stays cloudy during 2 weeks of quarantine. I tried to keep it under control by doing 30% water changes every other day, but found that frequent water changes stressing out the fish in quarantine.
Any advice on how to keep bacteria under control in quarantine tank?
