Quarantine tank

Break tank down. Set it up only when u need it and use media from current tank for the bacteria.
 
Thanks to both of you, makes sense. Just getting ready to start fresh water tank. Have had salt water reef off and on for over 30 years. Haven't had fresh water since I was in my teens. Much has changed since then.
 
No problem. I toss all media after using on qt tank and rinse out filter with hot water and let it dry. Then put new media and run on main tank to seed it again. Always has worked for me.
 
I keep my QT running all the time. When empty I dose with ammonia to raise to 2ppm every 3rd day. Then if required I do a 100% water change from my main tank and you're good to go.
I also use my QT to bring on plant cuttings (that might be wrong) so I keep it going.
