Quick sponge filter

I know this is going to probably sound weird (and lazy) but could I use a fluval pre-filter sponge, shove an airstone in it, and use it as a quick and temporary sponge filter?

Yes. Put a tube with holes in the centre of the sponge with the airstone in it. It will work better that way.

So...and forgive the questions, I have researched DIY sponge filters and something about their construction is alluding me because I'm just not getting it--not sure what, exactly, if it's the mechanics or what....airstone on one end of a short pipe, holes along pipe, sponge at end. Yes?

As the bubbles rise up the tube they take water with them, then new water gets sucked into the sponge, through the holes in the bottom of the tube and out the top.

Ok. I think I got what I was missing....I never did understand why if the bubbles go up, the sponge was on the bottom. But most images I found, it seemed like the airline was at the very top of the pipe. Further down, it makes more sense. Thank you! ^_^
