ram ID help

I bought a tiny little "bolivian ram" today which in the store was labelled as blue ram, but i knew it was bolivian. It has the red eye, with a black line running throught it, and a golden belly. It had red lining around every fin which looked quite beautiful. Only 6 bucks, so i got one and i have it in my 5gal for now until i can find a heater for my 10gal.

Once i got it home it looks more like an african cichlid(like a convict or something) instead of a ram. all the colours are gone, now it is just gray and black stripes. Here is a pic:

What is it? lol, i'm still hopeing it is a ram, but if it is a different type of cichlid it is going back.

Not sure what it is (definitely not a bolivian), but it looks like a type of apisto. If you got a mated pair, I'd keep it for sure.

I didn't go through that whole list, but the red eyes are throwing me off. GBRs are the only ones I've ever seen with red eyes. Sift through these and see if you find something similar. I'm a little tired or I'd do it for you. Like I said, I wouldn't return it just yet. Neat find.

Or, it could just be bad lighting and a stressed German Blue Ram. We'll see what others say.

Could be an Apisto or a wild-type M. ramirezii, but it is difficult to be sure with that photo...can you manage a better shot?

i do not think it is a bolivian, probaly a GBR or some type of Apisto

well, it was labelled as a blue, and it is showing flecks of blue without. Maybe they were right, its just that in the store they look IDENTICAL to a largwer, full grwon bolvian they had. They had no blue in them, a gold head, no striples, and red fins, now it looks so different! And the pink stomach wasnt there either. This fish is very shy so far but is getting better, it has been really hard to photograph.

That looks like a really stressed GBR (hence the lack of coloration). Has it (she) eaten yet? Her belly is really small.

she has been picking at algea, i am feeding her fior the first time tonight. Might just do it right now.

Update: i fed her some frozen brine shrimp ans she scarfed down about ten. Seemed to love them. She looks very nice, and the stomach is filled our almost instantly. I'm so excited

as she fattened up a bit her stomach tuined more pink. Lots of blue in her head too

ok, great, thanks, but now i am kindof dissapointed, i wanted a bolivian. This ram just isnt very pretty compared to other oned i have seen. I love her to peices still though. I will just have to find her a nice male.

If she starts eating and gets a little more comfortable over the next few days she'll color up quite a bit.

Was that a DP you had her in there with?

yeah, don't worry, that little pip-sqeak is harmless, i know they are agressive, but all it does is hides. Doesnt bother the ram AT ALL nor does that ram bother it. as i said, the ram is only temporarily in the 10gal. I hope to have her out within the month.

GBR's are typically more colorful than the bolivians I have seen. The males are especially colorful and very entertaining.

I agree with JRagg, give her a few days and I'm sure you will see a better color come out.

i really hope so, i was kindof diassapointed, but i would never return a fish because of colour. I fell in love with the fish the minute i saw it

GBR's are 10 X cooler and 10 X more colorful than Bolivians (okay, I'm biased) If she's eating okay and coloring up that's awesome. Get her a boyfriend and you won't be disappointed!
