I've got about 10-15 of these little "pests" in my planted 21g; my livebearers and neons are leaving them alone.

I do have an apple snail, and so anything other than manual removal or the lettuce trick wouldn't work, I'd think, but I'm curious how bad it is to have them in the tank. They do eat algae, and I've got a few of the tougher plants in hygrophilia, Java Fern, and Java Moss.
 
It isn't bad to have them in the tank, they just reproduce very quickly. If you keep an eye on them and remove them as they multiply they will be fine.
 
Personally I don't mind having them in my aquariums. The key is to not overfeed so that their numbers stay manageable.
