Anubias and Java fern for two. The stem that the roots and leaves sprout from is the rhizome. It must be above the substrate when planted. the rhizome can be cut to divide the plant into several pieces.

Thanks! Do subulata and swords have them? What happens if they aren't above the substrate?

No, neither of those have them. Swords do best when planted at the same depth that the roots start branching out IME. Deeper tends to rot some of the plant off.

Plant plants like swords and vals with the crown of the plant sticking out. Crypts, bucephalandras, java ferns, bolbitis, and anubas have rhizomes which are just sideways stems.
