Rinsing the biofilter

I looked at my biofilter and there is quite a bit of build up on it. The instructions say it should be rinsed. Would anyone disagree?

What other parts of the filter are there in your system? Such as carbon or foam.. What type of filter system is it? Such as HOB. Can you take a picture?

I have a HOB system that has 2 carts. One is the bio filter and the other contains the carbon and foam.

The carbon/foam filter is removed and changed weekly during water changes.

rinse it in a bucket with the old tank water during a PWC, then dump the bucket water, and reuse filter.
