RO unit Q's

Hi, I'm thinking about getting an RO unit. I'm wondering what the benefits are of these. Do they take out nitrites from the tap water? NitrAtes? Ammonia?

And, if I get one, how much water from the RO unit do I use during water changes? Do I mix it with tap water? If so, how much? Do I just use RO unit water?

Well the reason I used to have one is because he had really hard water. The fish we had liked softer water. It also took out a lot of iron and other things from the water. When we did water changes that was all we used.
