Is there any type of rock I should stay away from for my tank. I have some really pretty either quartz or limestone that I would like to add to my tank. Will this be a problem

Hi tinman,
It's a good idea to test the rocks with some muratic acid, which can be found at a place like Home Depot. If the rock fizzes, it's not inert and shouldn't be put into your tank.

I did a search, and here are some previous threads on this subject:

I can tell you right off that limestone is calcareous and will raise your KH/pH. Quartz should be completely neutral. Are you collecting these rocks locally or are you just thinking about what would look cool?

We've found these rocks locally. Fayetteville, Tn...Elk River and branching creeks. Theyre real cool. thanks for the threads and info

Have any pics? I love seeing the rocks people use in their tanks. So many planted tanks are lacking in rock structure IMHO :)

we will take pics when we get everything in....Right now the tank is empty...4 hours from now the tank will be full...I hope...lol

Awesome, I love putting a new tank together! There's nothing like sitting in front of a newly built aquarium and feeling your heart rate drop :D
