safe clay for substrate?

I've decided on a layered substrate for my 10g BW tank. I want some sort of clay on the bottom, peat and plant mulm in the middle, and some estes 1-2mm gravel on top. About 3" total.

What is a safe clay for this application? I want something that does not effect my water chemestry.
