Sand and plants

Will I be able to grow plants in a sand substrate? I know there are many other factors blah blah blah, but just pretend sand was the only variable.

You can grow plants perfectly fine in sand.

What's the best way to anchor them in the sand?

IME I simply dug a little hole, put the plants in, and-if the plants don't have any rhizomes or such and such, just roots-bury them so that the roots are in the bottom so they can take root and start growing.
