sand + filter???

Ivwanna start a new tank but with aquarium sand. How does that work, and how does it work with the filter

The filter should be fine. Turn the filter off while putting the sand in. Wait till the sand settles and then turn it back on. Have you intake like 2/3s of the way down and you should be good.

Home depot or a pool store. It comes in 50 lb bags for around 8 bucks

Sand is a substrate just like any other. Some people like it some do not. It does work well for bottom fish and diggers. Be sure to rinse it extremely well, when you think you are done do it again.
