So, I was informed that the power grid in my area was going through a scheduled outage today. I was given a bit of notice so I was able to do a 50% water change last night and reduce the amount of food given to my tanks for a few days to minimize waste (though not a full fast as my fish are ravenous beasties).

I imagine my tanks should be fine a few hours while the power's out but will of course check them when it returns.

But the whole thing got me wondering. Do any of you have scheduled outages and how do you prep for them?

Caveat: what kind of filter do you have? Some filters (like the aqua clears) will drain back into the tank if the water level is too low when power cuts. If I know I am likely to lose power because of a storm or something I do a water change and fill up the tank as much as I can to reduce the chances of that happening. If it happens unexpectedly and the filter does drain I just move the biomedia into the main tank until power comes back on.
