It's a mating ritual and also a way to show others it's their territory.

Yeah he's trying to seem bigger and meaner than he is. He probably colors up really bright while he does it too. They will also swim up to the others and show them their sides to establish they are not to be messed with lol

Kenyi females can be as aggresive as the males of other species...they are still saying don't mess with me
