currently have 20gl standard tank (not long). 1 betta, 2 tetra, 1 pleco, appro 50 RCS. have double sponge filter that has been running for months. is the HOB mechanical filter still necessary? moderately planted tank. very established. good test parameters all around. do not plan on adding any fish, possibly more shrimp.

No. Should have more than enough bb in the sponges. I would not remove the whole filter at once though to be sure. Take out a bunch of the bio media and then after a while do a ammonia and nitrite test. Then take our rest and do same. Should not have a spike and will show you have more than enough bb in sponges and tank.

"bi media" - referring to the mechanical filter HOB? I can shut it off but leave it in place. is that what you are suggesting? only want sponge filter running, if possible.
