Live sand? Is it really alive? I'm not understanding this. Live sand and live rock how!

The bacteria is the difference. Regular sand will become live over time just like base rock becomes live.

Live rock/sand just mean it's been cured over time and has bacteria and other living microorganisms living inside it. Dead base rock/sand will eventually become "live" overtime in your tank.

Also, it should be stated that there is alot of mixed opinion on if the bagged "live" sand is actually alive since it is sealed in a bag on a shelf for so long.
