Size of tank for cichlid breeding?

My friend and I were almost set on a 55 gallon but we're not sure if that is too big or too small.

What would you guys say is the ideal size and what size have you been successful in for breeding?

What species of cichlid's are you planning on breeding? The 55 is pretty good for most SA cichlids.

Probably african. Lake Mawalian most likely.

If you can, go bigger. The bigger the better for Malawi cichlids.

Bigger than 55 gallon?

Yes. You will be limited in what you breed with a 55. Do you want to breed haps, peacocks or mbuna? Which species?

Right now it's looking like peacock as one type and maybe a second type after we're having great success with them.

If you have 1 male and 3 females of the same type they would do nicely in a 55. Then you would really have to think carefully about tank mates.
