skimmer overkill?

is it possible to over do it with a skimmer? Like should you only use skimmers on the size tank that they are rated for?

Within reason, there is no such thing as skimmer overkill. I wouldnt use a skimmer rated for 600 gallons on a 50 gallon tank, though. I usually try to go with 2x the recommnded size. If anything, I feel better knowing my tank is not underskimmed.
 
I had my diy mag 7 venturi skimmer on a 55 gallon... that might have been a bit overkill... but it works good.. just tweaking it now.

the skimmer is 5' tall.. well 6' because it sits on a 1' tall box
 
Now that's a pretty cool DIY skimmer noteworthy :D
